Stories > Separate Is Not Equal — Sharon & Amber

Sharon & Amber

Sharon, 30, social worker & Youth Centre director. Amber, 32, acupuncturist & physician assistant
San Francisco, California 2008.

SP: I always wanted to get married. For a lot of little girls there's always this dream about your wedding. When I fell in love with a woman that dream didn't go away, it just was going to look a little bit different.

AW: There's not another good word to describe the relationship of marriage. If I were to say that we have a domestic partnership and someone says 'are you married?'
Do I say, "No, I'm domesticated"? "No, I'm in a civil union - I'm civilized? I'm unionized?"

SP: Proposition 8 was very hard. I believe in democracy but I don't believe the majority should
decide the rights of minority groups.

AW: And I truly believe that we are on the right side of history. Sharon, 30, social worker & Youth Centre director. Amber, 32, acupuncturist & physician assistant
